History

Our group of jugglers and performing artists formed in 1986. Original members of the community met at the Hawaiian Juggling Festival and loved the Big Island of Hawaii. In 1987 we bought 12 acres of wild jungle in the Puna district on the Big Island of Hawaii.  We incorporated “Bellyacres” as a Land Trust and Hawaii’s Volcano Circus as a non-profit educational organization. Together they form our artistic eco- village. There are currently over 30 members.

Our Progress

Over the years we have collectively worked thousands of hours on the land and have turned raw jungle into a paradise. We have built unique organic structures including:

bullet

six houses

bullet

a well-equipped and cozy communal kitchen

bullet

a workshop

bullet

a sauna

bullet

a bathhouse with toilets

bullet

a showerhouse

bullet

ten cabins built of bamboo and native wood, nestled in the tropical rain forest (we call them jungalows)

Landscape

"Bellyacres" is a kipuka (area with older vegetation) surrounded by a 1955 lava flow. It feels like an island or oasis away from most sights and sounds of the surrounding rural area. From our central parking lot we have trails and a winding gravel drive accessing each building.

Our land is a  patchwork of native ohia and lama trees, grass lawns, gardens and fruit orchards containing over two hundred trees including coconuts, mangos, avocados, papaya, bananas and citrus. We raise chickens and ducks for eggs and meat. Our cash crops include noni, coconuts and bamboo.
